So, that postal exam is looking pretty good right now. You might have taken a Highway Patrol exam or tried for other police departments. That Google search for government jobs websites

seems to be getting you somewhere. But alas! all is not well in the post-recession search period.

Why? Scammers. False advertising. Junk

What should you watch out for when you're hunting for a government job?

1: DO NOT PAY TO PLAY. Anyone who tries to charge you to take an exam or to "train" for a govt. job position, is scamming you. No legitimate govt. agency will charge you for an education that you can get for free at the library, or normally would have to go to school for.

2: STUDY FOR EXAMS. Yeah, you can study for just about every exam out there. Hit the search engines to figure out what materials are out there. Get names of books, then go to libraries and study.

3: If it looks too good to be true, it probably is. Use your own judgment.

4: Remember, government jobs are just as crappy as private-sector jobs. At certain levels, you might find your new government job to overwork and underpay you. If you want to become a CHP officer, are you prepared to do 12-hour days at times, and be on call when needed?

5: The most likely way to get a government position, is to join the military. It doesn't pay too well, but it looks better than anything else on the resume, you get training and experience in one of many job fields, and - hey, you fight for your country, too. How about them apples?

Happy hunting, and be careful out there. It's a rough recession.

When the Bureau of Labor Statistics released its September jobs report earlier this month, one line stood out to anyone scrolling down the columns of figures looking for good news. Government jobs grew by 9,000 across the country last month. A modest gain, but it represented the eighth straight month of public sector job growth, and the 11th in the last 12 months. Even as the private sector has shrunk by some 760,000 jobs this year, government headcount is up by about 200,000. Over the past year, government employment has now increased across America by 1.4 percent. Had the private sector grown similarly, we’d have added 1.62 million jobs....

Government Jobs Looking Better in the Downturn

"Want 50% more for your work? Get a government job. Private-sector employers may be cutting deeply into employee benefits, but for local and state governments, the gravy train rides on. Last year state and local governments spent an average of 51% more per employee on benefits and compensation than private-sector employers did, or $39.50 per hour worked versus $26.09, according to the Employee Benefits Research Institute. And the disparity continues to grow."
